Fishing Guide by Season

The Tidal waters of Discovery passage/Campbell River area are constantly changing, providing new opportunities each and every tide. Your guides at Tall Tale Charters are on top of the prime tides and times for fishing, providing you with the best opportunities possible. When asked what is my favorite time of the year? I have to say I love it all!

Winter-Spring Season (Nov-Mar)

Find resident Chinook Salmon, averaging 9-20 lbs. Winter Chinook Salmon are considered by some to be the best eating fish of all!

Inlet Fishing Months (Apr-Jun)

Chinook Salmon follow baitfish up and around the local pristine inlets, providing some fantastic fishing opportunities. This is also our favorite time of the year for picking oysters and clams, as well as prawning. Inlet trips need a minimum of at least one day, as it is about a 1 hour plus run to the best locations. There are limited accommodations available up these inlets, but we would be happy to arrange a custom charter package that includes accommodations. If this trip is something you are interested in, please request a custom tour.

Local Fishing (late May-July)

The best season for local fishing, right close to town! Locations like the “Lighthouse”, “Dogfish Bay”, and the “Green Can” are all good bets as the local Chinooks ,Inlet Chinooks and early northern Chinooks follow the bait into the local area. Many residents consider this time of the year their favorite! The average Chinook size for this season is 10-30lbs.

Prime Salmon Season (July-Sep)

This is the time of year when we start fishing north of Campbell River. Depending on the week you arrive, all species of Salmon have opportunities to be fished, including Pinks (mid-July to mid-September), Sockeye (late July-early August), Coho (mid-July-September), Chinook (10-50 lbs, July-September) and Chum (mid September-October). July through September are considered prime, salmon-fishing time, and are the best weather months. Book early!

Tyee Club Season (Aug-mid Sep)

A tradition since 1925—Anglers must successfully land a 30 lb.+ Tyee Salmon, under Tyee Club rules!

Campbell River’s Best Kept Secret (Oct)

Chum Season! These fish hit hard, fight hard, and are abundant! Size 10-25lbs, Considered to be the best Salmon for smoking.
